Lying on my mat one afternoon as a wonderful yoga teacher walked us through a meditation based on the seven chakras, I had a truly “aha” moment: The chakras and relationships are intrinsically connected!
It seemed to be more than a simple coincidence that there are seven of each: chakras and relationships’ principles. They both share powerful guidance for living a healthy life and creating healthy relationships, and I could not ignore the synchronicity of these thoughts.
Let’s talk about the link between chakras and relationships for yourself and your partner!
1. Root Chakra and Your Relationship Foundation
The First Principle:
A successful relationship is “Enhancing Love Maps.” Basically, this means that you have a foundation of deep friendship.
Healthy couples know each other well. They are aware of each other’s worries, hopes, and goals, and are truly interested in keeping up to date on what is going on in their partner’s life. Healthy couples check in with each other in the morning about their day, enjoy reuniting in the evening and have fun together. They truly care about each other and show it!
The First Chakra:
Offers your stability and strength in your life and relationship. It is located at the base of your spine, represented by the color red, and connected to the Mother Gaia.
How to use the Root Chakra connection to improve your relationship:
To help you strengthen the foundation in your relationship, sit with your partner, close your eyes, hold hands, and focus on your Root Chakra.
Think about one way that you can be a nurturing mother to your relationship, and make your partner feel more secure in the relationship. When you open your eyes share your idea with your partner.
2. Sacral Chakra and Cherishing Each Other
The Second Principle:
A successful relationship is “Nurturing Fondness and Admiration.” This means that you truly like and respect your partner, are proud to be by their side in life, and enjoy the emotional, physical, and intellectual connection.
The Second Chakra:
Represents these areas of connection, as well as your sense of abundance, wellbeing, pleasure, and creativity. It is located about two inches below your navel, represented by the color orange, and connected to Mother Gaia.
How to use the Sacral Chakra connection to improve your relationship:
Sit with your partner, close your eyes, visualize your Sacral Chakra, and see yourself as the Empress/Emperor in your relationship. Allow yourself to feel pleasure, wellbeing, and abundance. When you open your eyes, show your partner affection.
3. Solar Plexus Chakra and Relationship Strength
The Third Principle:
A successful relationship is “Turning Toward Each Other.” This means that you are able to connect with, respect, and offer support, even during times of conflict.
The Third Chakra:
The Solar Plexus Chakra corresponds to this principle as it allows you to remain confident, strong, and caring during the conflict, while also letting go of defensiveness and anger. It is located in your upper abdomen area, represented by the color yellow, and connected to Mother Gaia.
How to use the Solar Plexus Chakra connection to improve your relationship:
Sit with your partner, enjoy a cup of chamomile tea, channel your strong, respectful, caring, inner-Warrior, and lovingly discuss a recent conflict. Ask, “Did you feel heard? Does it feel resolved? Is there anything you need from me?”
4. Heart Chakra and Relationship Love and Longing
The Fourth Principle:
A successful relationship is “Accepting Influence.” When you remember that you are on the same team as your partner, and have the same goal of happiness, connection, and health, you are able to be open and flexible.
When you focus on “we,” instead of “me,” you will long for each other and the special moments you share together.
The Fourth Chakra:
The Heart Chakra directly impacts your ability to create a relationship with love and longing. It allows you to nurture the quality of your love, offer forgiveness, and experience joy and inner peace. It is located in the center of your chest, just above your heart, is represented by the color green, and connected to the Lover of Mother Gaia.
How to use the Heart Chakra connection to improve your relationship:
Sit together with one hand on your heart and the other on your partner’s, and ask your partner what he/she needs to feel loved by you. Next, commit to making love action as well as a feeling!
5. Throat Chakra and Relationship Communication
The Fifth Principle:
A successful relationship is “Solving Solvable Problems.” All relationships face challenges – some small, some seemingly insurmountable.
Healthy communication requires:

- Sharing complaints without criticism or contempt
- Avoiding escalation
- Softening during conflicts and repairing with care after
- Accepting that some issues are unsolvable
The Fifth Chakra:
The Throat Chakra allows you to have healthy communication and to speak your truth. It is located in the throat, represented by the color blue, and is connected to the Communicator Archetype. This archetype believes that words have weight, and speaks from a higher self with love and honesty.
How to use the Throat Chakra connection to improve your relationship:
Sit with your partner, visualize the color blue, show your love without words (for example, with a smile or a touch), and then verbally share a thought that communicates respect for their unique personality.
6. Third Eye Chakra and Relationship Resilience
The Sixth Principle:
A successful relationship is “Overcoming Gridlock.” The goal is to experience conflict without feeling frustrated, hurt, stuck, unheard, devalued, or disconnected. To do so, requires motivation, openness to explore the underlying themes, and mutual respect.
The Sixth Chakra:
The Third Eye Chakra offers a powerful avenue to help you focus, see the picture, and tap into your natural wisdom, intuition, and imagination. It is located between your eyebrows, represented by the color indigo, and connected to the Intuitive Gaia.
How to use the Third Eye Chakra connection to improve your relationship:
Sit with your partner, focus between your eyes, visualize the color indigo, and allow your Intuitive Archetype to bring you insight. Ask yourself what might get in the way of allowing you to be completely open in your relationship. Open your eyes and share your insight with your partner.
7. Crown Chakra and Relationship Growth
The Seventh Principle:
The final principle for a successful relationship is “Creating Shared Meaning.” This principle is truly a spiritual dimension that creates a deep, connected, inner life together.
Couples that nurture ritual, roles, goals, and symbols enjoy a strong sense of shared meaning that helps them to be resilient during times of challenge and enjoy a feeling of being a strong team.
The Seventh Chakra:
The Crown Chakra enhances your ability to be fully connected spiritually to yourself and your partner further linking chakras and relationships. It sees the beauty within each of you and your collective relationship. It is located on the top of your head, represented by the color violet, and is connected to the Guru Gaia
How to use the Crown Chakra connection to improve your relationship:
Sit with your partner, close your eyes, and focus on your Crown Chakra. Feel the energy flowing in and down, and settling on your inner-guru, who will offer you wisdom about your dreams and goals in your life and your relationship. Then, ask your partner what they dream about for life and how you can help them realize that vision.
